THE PRICE HAS A REASON.
The cost follows the repair plan. Additional labor, component replacement, refinishing and required system checks can increase the bill. These are cost drivers—not a claim that every Tesla or Rivian dent costs more than a comparable repair on another vehicle.
01The material changes the method.
Aluminum, steel and structural castings cannot all be treated the same way. Tesla’s Model 3 manual sets different limits for different material grades and reserves cast or extruded aluminum repairs for component-specific procedures. A repairable outer skin is a different job from a damaged structural member.

A dent is visible from outside; the working space behind it may be restricted by reinforcement, trim, wiring or bonded construction. Assessment includes whether controlled access is possible and what must be removed and refitted. Small visible damage does not necessarily mean a short repair.
03Sensors add another layer.
Rivian’s R1T and R1S guidance covers cameras, radar and other driver-assistance hardware. Certain repairs or component operations require calibration; others do not. The applicable model, generation and service procedure determine the work, rather than a blanket calibration charge for every dent.

Where the manufacturer’s procedure rules out straightening or limits sectioning, replacement may be required. Replacement adds associated removal, installation and finishing operations. The correct procedure must match the exact vehicle and damaged component.

If paint is damaged or PDR is unsuitable, preparation, color matching, refinishing and any necessary blending become part of the estimate. A spot repair is not automatically appropriate for every finish or damage location. Existing paintwork also changes the assessment.
06Specialist work needs specialist facilities.
Manufacturer approval involves training and equipment, not simply experience working on EVs. Tesla describes its approved shops as factory trained and equipped. Rivian specifies certified technicians and network locations for ADAS repair and calibration. Those requirements help explain the additional operations and resources in collision estimates.
